Voter ID

Message from the DCRCC Chairman:

Nevada’s “Voter Identification Initiative”, Question 7, is a common-sense approach to safeguarding our elections.  Voter ID is favored by >70% of Nevadans to restore faith and confidence that our elections are conducted properly, that those who vote are the actual registered voters, while reducing the potential for fraud and improper actions.

Nevada is ranked 50th in the nation for Voter Integrity and currently does not require voters to provide any type of identification before voting, but each voter is required to provide a signature that must match the one in the state’s files.  In 2020, an unscientific test was done by a reporter in Clark County.  He signed 9 random ballots taken from off the street and mailed them in.  8 of the 9 ballots or 89% were accepted for counting.

Question 7 aims to amend Nevada’s Constitution by requiring in-person voters to provide valid photo identification (Valid forms of identification include driver's licenses, U.S. passports, U.S. military ID cards, student IDs, concealed carry permits. The ID must be current or expired for no more than 4 years.  Voters 70 years or older can have an ID expired for any length of time as long as it was once valid.) Those voting by mail would provide a personally identifiable number, such as part of a driver’s license number or Social Security number, alongside their signature.  Not perfect, but would go a long way to improving confidence.

By ensuring that every legitimate vote is counted, Question 7 will uphold the fundamental principles of democracy and ensure that the voice of every citizen is heard. When voters know that a secure system is in place, their confidence in the electoral process and its outcomes increases. Requiring identification helps ensure that each vote cast is legitimate and prevents instances of voter impersonation and other forms of electoral fraud.

Nevadans overwhelmingly support Voter ID; 93% of Republicans, 62% of Democrats, and 68% of Independents are in favor of requiring all voters to show government-issued photo identification to vote.  Since Question 7 alters the state constitution, it would need to pass in both the 2024 and 2026 election cycles in order to become law.  Vote YES on 7.

Together, let’s make Nevada better and restore trust in our elections !!
